Project 8 - Consentful Interface
Design Process
I started by creating a flow chart to sketch out my user flow for a consentful interface:
Once I felt comfortable with the flow, I simply iterated on the DOM elements visual style that I felt was appropriate. The code structure itself required some tweaking and design to create a camera-less interface.
My interface ultimately allows for a user to experience 'painting on a canvas' without necessarily needing the camera to be on. I wanted to establish an inclusive interface.
I felt good about the interface. I think the consentful interaction actually improved the flow of the experimental camera immensely. I think the non-activated camera is also an interesting mode.
In my game, consent is freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, and specific. I provide the user with options to backtrack to change their permissions, and also lay out all the facts about the application when the user is first greeted.
I had to rethink how to present the canvas to a user who did not want their camera on. This required a different approach to how the game was presented... one that emphasized the painting on the canvas over the camera painting on the canvas. The project was ultimately more inclusive and accessible.
