Project 5 - Anti-Surveillance

Description

My anti-surveillance assignment is an ode to my grandmother, Edna Brill, a holocaust survivor and my biggest hero. My grandma was a child when the Nazis invaded Poland. My Grandma was 9 when she was a soldier in the Warsaw Uprising, where she was the youngest soldier she knew of. Her role was to be a courrier, and transport confidential letters between addresses. Edna did not know how to read or write, although she didn't tell anybody this, so when she'd receive a new letter she'd ask the sender to repeat the address several times because the handwriting was poor. She had a photographic memory, and would place the letters, after reciting them in her head, between her fingers to connect in her brain the order of the addresses.

Process

I decided to represent Edna's story in game form with p5. I drew the hand sketches myself, and transferred them to photoshop where I digitally added color and slight edits. I imported the png's to p5, and created a game format when I'd display random addresses for 5 seconds each, then ask the user to recite addresses.

Reflections

Your assignment reflections My identity as the granchild as a holocaust survivor was the sole determinant of my choice of project content. I wanted to allow myself the opportunity better understand the experience of my grandmother, and allow others the opportunity as well. I chose the name "Kaytek" because that was her nickname in the Polish Uprising Army -- eluding to Kaytek the Wizard.
